Keeping tabs on tsunami threats
AT THE Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD), the Geophysics and Tsunami division operations office was hard at work monitoring the seismic activity in and around the region.
The rounded office featured several rows of computers circling a central console, where MMD staff did everything from monitoring to analysing the barrage of data streamed from the 17 seismological stations nationwide.
The New Straits Times witnessed first-hand how this complex monitoring station reacted after an earthquake was detected during its visit at 3.38pm yesterday.
The endless humming of dozens of processing units in the background were momentarily interrupted by a sharp siren emanating from one of the many monitors.
There was an immediate flurry of activity, with staff scanning digital seismographs to determine the magnitude, location and depth of the earthquake which just struck a region in Papua New Guinea.
The department's top management, including director-general Datuk Dr Yap Kok Seng, deputy director-general Alui Bahari, and senior director Dr Mohd Rosaidi Che Abas, rushed into the operations centre seconds after the siren sounded.
