After traumatic injury, recovery starts with the BRAIN
And aphasia - a disorder that results in damage to the communicative part of the brain. The stroke left her speechless and she would have to relearn how to read and write.It has been a challenging recovery for Toole and Kuroiwa. But with community service groups such as the Huntington Beach-based Brain Rehabilitation and Injury Network (B.R.A.I.N.), which serves clients throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties, they and other survivors of brain injuries have access to advocates who help advance their recovery process.
"I never thought I would be handicapped and still have a life," said Toole. "But B.R.A.I.N. makes sure I still have a life and it feels like a place I belong."
The nonprofit B.R.A.I.N. brings together brain injury survivors, along with their family and friends, to aid in their recovery by providing a plethora of resources and extensive support.
